SirGary Sobers was unquestionably the world's greatestever all-round cricketer (1952 to 1974), Sobers was born onJuly 28, 1936 in Bay Land, Barbados. Sir Garfield Sobers wasborn with a special gift, he was so good as a sportsman that he couldhave excelled at football and basketball as well. Whether batting,bowling or fielding, he showed excellent skill and ability from earlyand it was hardly a surprise that he made his Test debut at the age of17 after playing at the first-class level for Barbados a year earlier.
Sobers made hisdebut in the final Test at Sabina Park against the touringEnglish side of 1954. He was pick as a bowler for hisslow left arm spin replacing Alf Valentine, four years later SirGarfield Sobers set the Test record for an individual batsman, with amammoth 365 against Pakistan in 1958 also at Sabina Park. He batted 10hours and 8 minutes played every stroke in book and never gave asemblance of a chance.
In 1968, Sobers became the firstever batsman to hit six sixes off one over of six consecutive balls infirst-class cricket. Sobers was playing as captain of Nottinghamshireagainst Glamorgan in Swansea; the unfortunate bowler was Malcolm Nash.This tally of 36 runs off an over beat a 57 year-old record of 34 runs,held by Ted Alletson. The feat of six sixes in an over has since beenmatched only once, by Ravi Shastri, playing for Bombay against Barodain 1984.
Sobers captained the West Indiescricket team for 39 matches between 1965 and 1972, the Barbados team in1966 and 1967, Nottinghamshire from 1968-1971 and the Rest of the Worldfor two tours - one of England and the other of Australia.
Sir Garfield Sobers Retiring in1974 after his knee cartilage finally gave out, he featured in anotherprecedent when, in 1975, Queen Elizabeth II overturned tradition bydubbing him a Knight in an open-air ceremony at the Garrison Savannahinstead of at Buckingham Palace.
Sir Garfield Sobers is the onlyliving National Hero of Barbados, he wsa given the highest honour ofhis native land. Sir Garfield Sobers is currently one of the Standford20/20 legends with responsibilty for team St. Lucia.
